Let’s ‘Lent’
Over two thousand years ago, Jesus before he began his public ministry he went out to the wilderness for 40 days to pray and fast. This is the reason we have lent, to commemorate this period.
Lent is a period of 40 days right before Easter, beginning on “Ash Wednesday”. This is a period of reflection and preparation before Easter Celebrations. This is a time of prayer and penance. In the world today not so many people embrace the whole prayer and fasting tradition but choose to surrender a particular vice. They could choose to forgo their favorite meals, stop drinking or smoking or sacrificing their favorite activities. Whatever the sacrifice is, it is a reflection of Jesus’ deprivation in the wilderness, a test of self-discipline.
Today we begin the lent season, our theme this year being ‘Renewed by the Spirit’. May God give us the grace to sacrifice and have a great time of prayer and recollection throughout this lent. May we have our spirits renewed this lent.
